Phasing

The ditch has been phased to the Anglian period by the find of a single Anglian sherd. No other pottery was recovered. The ditch was cut by Middle Saxon Grubenhaus 012AC09507.

Discussion

Only a short segment of this ditch was excavated, as its eastern extent remained under a spoil heap for most of the 1995 season. It is probably the western end of one of the sequence of enclosures defined in area 12AB, although it could not be assigned to any of these, as its orientaion was further to the south than any excavated in the adjacent area. It was not seen to the north or west of Gubenhaus 012AC09507, due to plough truncation. The fill was a sandy loam (Munsell colour 10YR 3/3), with 5% chalk inclusions varying from <1cm up to 8cm in diameter.

The ditch was cut into chalk, with a V-profile, although this was difficult to determine due to the plough truncation in the west. No sections were drawn.
